Postpartum Therapy and Maternal Mental Health Support in California (CA)

VIRTUAL MATERNAL MENTAL HEALTH THERAPY IN CALIFORNIA

Specialized, judgment-free support for new and expecting moms, from California-licensed therapists who understand what this season actually feels like.

What is Maternal Mental Health Therapy?

Maternal mental health therapy is specialized support for the emotional challenges that come with pregnancy, childbirth, and early motherhood. That can mean postpartum depression or anxiety, but it also includes the less-talked-about stuff: the identity shift of becoming a mom, the pressure to feel grateful when you mostly feel exhausted, the grief of a pregnancy or birth experience that didn’t go how you hoped, or simply the overwhelming reality of keeping a tiny human alive while still being yourself.

Our California-licensed therapists provide a space where you don’t have to perform okayness. You can bring whatever you’re actually carrying, and we’ll work through it together.

Specialized Training in Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders

Our team includes therapists with dedicated training in Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders (PMADs), a clinical specialty that goes beyond general therapy to specifically address the mental health challenges of pregnancy and the postpartum period.

Tejal Misra, LCSW, founder of Be Well Therapy Collective, holds this specialized training alongside more than a decade of clinical experience. She draws from Emotionally Focused Therapy and brings a warm, psychodynamic approach to supporting mothers navigating this transition.

Tejal currently has limited availability. Book a consultation to inquire.

Meet Roshel, One of Our California Therapists.

Roshel holds a Master of Social Work from the University of Southern California and is licensed to provide therapy throughout California. She works with individuals and couples navigating postpartum adjustment, identity shifts in new parenthood, relationship changes after having a baby, and the emotional weight that motherhood can bring.

“If you feel overwhelmed, disconnected, or unsure of what you want, you’re not alone. Therapy can be a place to slow down, make sense of what feels messy, and reconnect with yourself. I offer a culturally responsive, judgment-free space for individuals and couples to explore life transitions, relationships, identity, and the patterns that shape how they connect and cope.”

How We Approach Maternal Mental Health

Motherhood doesn’t happen in isolation: it affects your sense of self, your relationships, your body, and your sense of the future all at once. Our approach recognizes that.

We draw on Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) to help clients understand and shift the emotional patterns that get activated during major life transitions. For new mothers, that often means unpacking the gap between what you thought this would feel like and what it actually does — and finding a way to move forward that doesn’t require you to pretend the hard parts aren’t hard.

Sessions are fully virtual, so you can connect with your therapist from wherever works for you — at home, during nap time, in your car if that’s the only quiet space you have. We get it.

Maternal Mental Health Therapy Is for Mothers Who Need Real Support

You don’t have to be in crisis to reach out. Therapy can help if you’re experiencing any of the following:

  • Postpartum depression or persistent sadness after birth
  • Postpartum anxiety — racing thoughts, constant worry, difficulty sleeping
  • Feeling disconnected from your baby, your partner, or yourself
  • Anger, irritability, or emotional numbness that doesn’t feel like “you”
  • Intrusive thoughts that are scaring you (these are more common than you think)
  • Grief over a birth experience that didn’t go as planned
  • Struggling with your new identity as a mother
  • Anxiety or mood changes during pregnancy (prenatal mental health)
  • Simply feeling like you’ve lost yourself somewhere in all of this

We provide support that holds both things at once — the deep love you have for your child, and the very real struggle you might be in right now. Both are true. Neither cancels the other out.

Common Questions About Maternal Mental Health Therapy in California

Does insurance cover maternal mental health therapy in California?

It depends on your plan and the type of therapy. Individual sessions may be covered by insurance; couples or family sessions typically are not. When you reach out for a consultation, we’ll answer any questions about fees and what to expect.

It’s not always easy to tell, and you don’t need to have it figured out before reaching out. If your mood, anxiety, or sense of yourself feels different from your baseline — and especially if it’s been more than two weeks — talking to a therapist is a good next step. You don’t have to wait until it’s severe.

Yes. Prenatal mental health support is just as important as postpartum care. Many of our clients start therapy during pregnancy to prepare for the transition and build support before the baby arrives.

It varies. Some clients notice meaningful shifts within a few months; others continue longer depending on what they’re working through. Your therapist will check in on progress regularly, and you’re always in control of the pace.

Start with a free consultation. There’s no commitment; it’s a conversation to help you figure out if this feels like the right fit.

Currently accepting new clients throughout California. Virtual sessions statewide — no commute, no waiting room.
